Ideas people come up with independently tend to make better Summer of
Code projects than the ones picked off a list.

You should pick a project you aim to complete in GSoC, but your project
doesn't have to be usable in general then. For example, your project
could be to make a utility that only runs on the command line, even if
it really needs a graphical interface and some integration with the rest
of the panorama creation process to be worthwhile.
