Hullo All,
I am looking for some thoughts, from the hugin cognoscenti, on the tricks and traps that might be involved with re-aligning remapped images.
First a bit of background, as it may help.
Many moons ago I began looking at the problem raised by John Gooch, of how to save a pano spoiled by one motion blurred image. The current state-of-the-art (blind and non-blind) deconvolution is pretty good for single image correction, but nowhere near good enough when the deblurred image is to be stitched with a sharp image. I have been working towards estimating a blur kernel from the blur-sharp overlap and using that to obtain an improved deblur. The main problem thus far has been obtaining a sufficiently accurate alignment of the blur-sharp image pair, so I am currently trying a scheme of iterating the alignment, basically as follows;

1. Align blur-sharp pair and save remapped images.
2. Estimate blur kernel and deblur the remapped blur.
3. Generate CPs for the deblur and sharp, save .pto, edit .pto to substitute remapped blur for deblur, then get a new alignment.
4. Go to 2, and repeat the process.

The iterative process does improve the alignment a bit each step when optimising y,p,r,v. I have run into problems when attempting to add lens parameters to the optimisation. The distortion coefficients are reported to be large and the FPW image goes haywire. Typically when aligning the original blur-sharp pair I align in steps, checking CPs, removing the worst, and end up optimising everything. I am not using lens calibration data.

Any thoughts/advice on the alignment of the remapped images, to get the best possible alignment at each iteration, would be appreciated, along with any other thoughts on the basic problem.

Cheers,

Terry Duell
