I have tried it on ubuntu Natty (gcc-4.4), and found that I can get it
to crash at -O3 level on my test data.

I have confirmation from Carlos that it crashes on his system in
the same function as on mine.

It is around line 100 of maskpyramids.cpp

         pixel=input[p++];

by the time it crashes p has the value 120thousand. In a normal run I
normally see p run up to 7 or 8, but never higher. I haven't checked
this, just by hand. OK. checked: It does occasionally go above 10, but
never over 20.

So apparently the loop isn't terminating when it should....

Code inspection has learned that (the line before the crash):
        while (readmore>0) {

could just as well read:

        while (1) {

because readmore can never be assigned a value other than 1, 2 or
three.

The exit from the loop will be caused by a "break" statement in the
loop.

(To be sure: The problem can be inside this function, (compilation or
the code, but it could just as well be somewhere else and that this
crashes because it gets wrong data. )

My debugging code shows it goes weird on the first call with inwidth
!= 14917.

....
inwidth=14917
inwidth=14917
inwidth=7459
readmore=1, p=21, readsofar = 22383
inwidth=7459

Even when I abort the loop at p==21, it crashes eventually.

        Roger.

The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike
Phil, this plan just might work.
