When Hugin gets into a crash fit (I do have a feeling too that crashes tend to happen together, even on different panoramas), I use the following procedure: I load the project in Hugin, execute one step, save, exit Hugin and so on. By "step" I mean one GUI tab, I never had to do this between operations in one tab. For example, I edit control points (add, remove, adjust...), then I save, then I do optimization. If Hugin crashes then (which seldom happened at that point), I can reload the project just before the optimisation, with my CPs edited. I ALWAYS save before opening the preview window. I found that with this procedure, I managed to assemble almost all my panoramas. I am using the same 2011.4 version of Hugin as Alex-656, on Vista too (32 bits) on a Dell laptop with 3GB of RAM, so my situation is similar. OTOH, the Hugin developers seem to think that the crashes may be related to the video board more than to the rest of the system. So knowing which video board and which CPU you have may be relevant. FWIW, my CPU is an Intel T6670 and my video board is an nVidia GeForce 9300M GS. The results of reformatting are interesting. It suggests that your problem would have something to do with performance. Windows is prone to "bit rot" or rather "software rot". Did you try to defrag your hard disk?
