I run an Acer laptop using vista with 3gb of ram and also plenty of HD space. I use the 4.0 version and also the 2.0, both with similar problems. To make panoramas I need to format my computer to avoid crashes. After re-format I might get a couple of days before crashes occur. This occurs as Alex 656 said after loading images. Also I've had problems after steps 1 + 2 and when I press Create Panorama the GUI stitcher crashes. Also when I try to expand the preview of the image it crashes. Therefore the only way I can make panoramas is to work blind pressing create panorama without looking at the preview and then only immediatly after format. I love this software and want to avoid reformatting every couple of days. When Hugin gets into a crash fit (I do have a feeling too that crashes tend to happen together, even on different panoramas), I use the following procedure: I load the project in Hugin, execute one step, save, exit Hugin and so on. By "step" I mean one GUI tab, I never had to do this between operations in one tab. For example, I edit control points (add, remove, adjust...), then I save, then I do optimization. If Hugin crashes then (which seldom happened at that point), I can reload the project just before the optimisation, with my CPs edited. I ALWAYS save before opening the preview window. I found that with this procedure, I managed to assemble almost all my panoramas. I am using the same 2011.4 version of Hugin as Alex-656, on Vista too (32 bits) on a Dell laptop with 3GB of RAM, so my situation is similar. OTOH, the Hugin developers seem to think that the crashes may be related to the video board more than to the rest of the system. So knowing which video board and which CPU you have may be relevant. FWIW, my CPU is an Intel T6670 and my video board is an nVidia GeForce 9300M GS.
Actually, I think they think something Hugin is doing triggers a problem in the GL drivers. I have another program here that uses GL, and it behaves flawlessly.
Running Debian Sid here on 2 machines. My laptop has Intel 855GM chipset (I think the number's right, it's an old laptop). The Desktop has a relatively-new NVidia PCIE adapter. Same version of Hugin installed on both machines (32-bit on laptop, 64-bit on desktop). The one on the laptop silently dies when trying to use the fast preview. The one on the desktop works with no problems.
