Well Dee- I think that the mechanisms are quite complex- looking at
what the ear/brain is capable of. My original comment ,though, was
aimed at the complexity of the Hum issus in terms of its presentation
and reportage at large.
On here and elsewhere there's a wealth of experiences and opinions,
all valid in their way more or less even the tinnitus issue can't be
totally denied, however irritating it can be as a 'get out'.
I've no doubt that much research is repressed and though the taxpayer
funds a lot of it, directly or indirectly  not enough pressure is
applied as to what's found out & really going on, in many fields.
Watchdogs and the press are too hand in glove with power brokers- look
at the Murdoch saga unfolding now... and quangos are mostly self
serving- like the rest of the establishment.
A sad state to be in , really!
