I have found that it really doesn't work to even play in unison with
the singing. The salient question "Are you singing in English?" I have
since dropped down to drones during the verses with melodic fills or
"spacers". Any coup work when singing that is mere punctuation: A
short light hit every 4 bars or so. I have looked into a note change
on the chanter to express the chord changes, (with a G drone I might
play B or a D To get a G chord, or a C or E for a Chord: I have one
song that is in G but uses Emin, so I would play B and try to hang on
to it. t am not satisfied with the results, vs the work involved.

My best result to date is reciting lyric or short poems between dance
tunes. We would all prefer that anybody else sing (rather than me),
but sometimes one is out there alone, and to misquote John Wayne: "A
man's gotta do what a man's gotta do."
