Well thank you Dave for that glowing review of Le Son du Bois, and for
appreciating the production. I do believe that an instrument like the
hurdy-gurdy needs a good studio with good microphones and a good engineer. Home
studios are fine if you are only playing an electronic keyboard one-handed
whilst working the studio with the other hand. Try that with a gurdy and the
instrument does not get the attention it deserves.
Re downloads. There is a bit of admin involved in setting it up, I signed to
Cadiz music who did the technical stuff for me; however, although they are
happy to distribute so-called "minority music" ie hurdy-gurdies, it is not easy
for the casual buyer to find on ITunes etc without full link information.
Basically, Madonna and U2 are in the shop window, Martin Carthy is prominent in
the folk section and the likes of hurdy-gurdy music is in the internet
equivalent of being under a pile of books in a dark corner of the stockroom.
There is not too much money in downloads as I think most people in our field
prefer to pay extra for the cd, as it includes composer credits, sleeve notes
and musician listings that downloads don't. I went through a brief period of
buying downloads but now buy the cd and put it on my ipod. I have some great
musicians on my albums and in the world of downloads they don't get credited,
neither do the luthiers without whome the sounds we make would not be possible.
To give your download the same benefits as the cd I will happily let you have a
copy of the sleeve.
Yes I do seem to be featuring more songs. I am particularly interested in
exploring the hurdy-gurdy in the context of songs and it is proving popular
with some people; however, people into gurdies tend to prefer the instrumental
stuff.
Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil,

I bought that from HMV Digital at the weekend and I'm glad I did, the
album's very enjoyable (and well-produced, naturally). I don't remember
hearing a car engine opening an album before... and your take on
"Derriere Chez Nous" was marvellous. Am I misremembering or are you
including more songs than on previous albums?

Out of interest - and if it's too personal, just say so: how do the
various online sales outlets compare in terms of admin effort required,
fee/percent charged, that sort of thing? How receptive are they to such
niche music as hurdy-gurdy recordings?

Cheers,
Dave
