FWIW, there is another solution.  We don't drill the holes in the pegs
out.  Instead, when stringing the gros bourdon we remove a few cm (a
little over an inch) of the wire wrap from the outside of the string.
The resulting gut core is small enough to fit through the hole in the
peg.
