Does anyone know of any "popular" artists, or other celebs (outside
the traditional musical genre) who play hurdy-gurdy? I can think of Sting
and a member of Pink Floyd (but which one??), for example. Any others of
note? Not meaning to short-change our own stars--just looking for example
to cite for "outsiders".
Don't use Sting. He was playing "air" H-G, using a rented instrument
whose strings were not in contact with the wheel, in that Oscar
telecast. Just a pose, to appear deep. Another ripoff. If you see a
recording of the segment, note that he was holding the head of the
instrument, his hands nowhere near the keys.
The Pink Floyd example too dredges up a vague recollection of hearing
just who was hired to play for that session, the implication being that
it wasn't a member of the band.
I personally don't know of even a single mainstream celebrity who plays
the H-G, which doesn't displease me in the least.
