The guitar player from the Decemberists plays a Hurdy Gurdy. I haven't seen it, live nor a video, but my friend went to their concert in New York and calle me during the concert to tell me about it. As to how mainstream they are.... At least i think that they are sort of, just not radio mainstream maybe? The girl from Arcadefire plays one, but I think they are in the same situation. There is also a fairly popular metal band that has a hurdy gurdy: 'Eluveitie.' they're how I first heard the instrument.
