A copy of "Historic Lute Construction" by Robert Lundberg (ISBN 0-9626447-4-9) 
might help. I understand he was the foremost authority on lute construction 
during the end of his life. He seems to prefer both nylon and gut and uses both 
Pyramid and La Bella strings.
