Lark also has a very good Giata teacher and a great group of dedicated players.

Another US option is Lark In The Morning camp, first week of August, in the
woods outside Mendocino, California. http://larkcamp.com/. A bit expensive for
the week, and not strictly focused on the gurdy, but there is a hard-core
French trad contingent in "Camp 2 French Camp" where central France trad is
going on in one form or another most of the day every day. Our own Penny Cloud
(of this list) teaches French trad repertoire 2 hours a day, and probably could
be persuaded to give some personal gurdy instruction on the side, which would
be very worthwhile, as she is a fine player and teacher. And it's a nice
scene...French trad session every afternoon under the redwoods for 2-3 hours
with wine and cheeses and gurdies and bagpipes and diatonics, including a
handful of very experienced players.

Just another option to consider.

It's a shame Lark doesn't happen closer to Chants des Vielles, or you could
combine them on one trip.

In the absence of OTW this year, maybe you should consider flying to France
instead of US/Canada. I don't know how much more expensive the airfare is, but
if you want intensive HG instruction, it's hard to beat France in summer,
summer heat notwithstanding. I particularly suggest the Fete les Volcaniques
near Riom in early July. Scroll down the following page for the Stage d'Ete
brochure http://brayauds.free.fr/infos-rdv.php (it's in four separate PDF
files). About 6 hours a day of instruction for several days, plus a great
community of musicians in a great setting, and wonderful dances every night.

We haven't been to Chants des Vielles for a few years. It was great fun, mostly
because we love Quebecois music and trad Quebecois musicians, and there were
some nice performances involving gurdy, but not much instruction. And it only
lasts a weekend. That may have changed in the intervening years. Maybe others
on the list who've been more recently can comment about CDV.

Hi David

I sent you and Mel a private message about that event and the one near
Montreal...

Seriously, it won't have a more extensive HG track (as you mentioned before)? I
was kinda planning maybe not attending the festival in Montreal (Chant des
Vielles), but it would make little sense for me to go all the way from Brazil
just for "diddly bow" and all... Maybe I'll reconsider going to Montreal after
all, but is anyone else here planning on going there as well?

Please take a look at the message I just sent you guys.

Sally (and all),

The Gathering in September is an al fresco (big word for outdoor)
event held at Greenwood Furnace State Park, about 20 miles north of
Huntingdon, PA. Everyone brings a tent (there is space for RVs) and
workshops are divided fifty/fifty between indoor space and outdoor
pavilions. Dining is outdoors (excellent catering!) and there are good
toilet/shower facilities available. There won't be any HG workshops
(this year, anyway) other than "Hurdy Gurdy, Diddly-Bow and other
weird instruments" (oh, the insult!) to introduce ourselves to the
Great Unwashed.

It's a fun event with plenty of cover for wet weather (even if I did
nearly did float off in an overnight rainstorm, but that was my own
fault) and a great chance to play with a huge mix of other instruments
- I've never seen so many piano accordions in one place at one time!

Put it on your calendar!
