Mike--

This may seem a joke, but it is a true story. Back in the 1990's I told
myself I couldn't afford a hurdy-gurdy kit, much less a ready-to-play one. I
found this web page:

HOW TO MAKE A VERY NICE SOUNDING HURDY GURDY FOR UNDER $20
http://dennishavlena.com/hurdy.htm

So, I made a hurdy-gurdy totally from scratch based upon this sketchy
information. It did cost me over $20, though! I've played it in public and
even won a talent contest with it. I still have it. It was fun to make,
but it is more of a frustration and noise generator than a musical
instrument. Making this "toy" one more than ever inspired me to want a
"real" one. If I had gotten the kit back then, I could have been playing
something nice the last 10+ years. So, don't try to cut too many corners...
