The tekero technique for Hungarian music is different from the French style.
The wheel is small, making fast 'coups' easy. The small wheel is less
suitable for slower melodies; imagine the difference between short bow folk
fiddles articulating short notes (semi-quavers) all the time and violins
with a standard bow. Irish players use a standard bow but use only a short
section of it because the notes are fast and furious. More of the bow is
used in slow airs. So it is more a matter of what music you want to play
rather than the tone quality of the instrument. They all sound like
hurdy-gurdies, after all. MP

I know the Hackman's. I met them in 1995 at Tacoma. We all attended a peg
making workshop with Eric Meyer. I learned a lot from Eric and have made
hundreds of pegs since. Mostly for lutes and citterns and fiddles! Is
there any way to post photos? Also, I have some new, I think, ideas. I'd
like to share them. since I have resumed making this 'gurdy, I anticipate
finishing it up within six months.

vs vielle a roue
Ryan Hammonds <[email protected]> Feb 12 03:37PM -0800

Can anyone tell me the difference in sound between the tekero and
vielle? I understand the physical differences. I have also listened to
a ton of samples. And, what it comes down to is that the tekero seems
to have a deeper, muted sound. But other than that, it all seems like
a fiddle/violin distinction where the music played is different rather
than the instrument's sound. Any help would be appreciated. On the
cusp of buying one or the other.
