I try to give 2 ou 3 answers to this large question of the breton repertoire for vielle. The breton model for vielle is "Pimpard - hautes éclisses" : Pimpard (maker in Jenzat), in the 80's of the XIXth century, sell vielles to a watchmaker living in Lamballe (Côtes du Nord - one of the four departments of Brittany) : Isidore Cloteaux. So, the vielles were not labelled by Pimpard, but by Cloteaux - Horloger - Lamballe, the re-seller ! A large part of vielles played in Bretagne were Pimpard / Cloteaux models. And some vielles were made by handcraft of very humble people (peasants, sailors...) The vielle in Bretagne concern the part where the french language was spoken (Haute Bretagne) and not the part where the breton language was spoken. The border of playing / not playing the vielle was (and is even today) the same as the border of the languages french / breton (maybe, some exceptions..) The territory where the vielle is played is the East of the Côtes du Nord (now named Côtes d'Armor) to the West side of the Ille et Vilaine, from the North of Rennes to Saint Malo : a square of 80 or 100 kilometers, at the East of Brittany, near France (Brittany was a duchy independent from France until the XVIth century) So, the traditional repertoire is not very particular in breton music (as An-Dro, Hanter-Dro, round danses...), but come from the old french dances as "contredanses" from the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries. When find quadrilles, polka, scottisch, marches, valses, mazurkas played on the vielles. And specific local dances like Guédennes, Aéroplane.. There is no book or public sources for this music. Number of "sonneurs de vielle" have been collected in the 80's by the previous association "Collectif Vielle" especially by Michel Colleu, and you hear some of them on the web " Dastum -> archives du patrimoine oral : médiathèque dastum.net". A CD was realized by Le Chasse Marée in Douarnenez : "Sonneurs de vielle en Bretagne". You can by this CD here : http://www.chasse-maree.com/musique/1419-sonneurs-de-vielle-en-bretagne.html The main "sonneurs de vielle" were recorded for this CD, so you can here the specific "jeu breton" (breton art of playing !), and capture the melody with your musical ear ! The association "Vielle à roue en Bretagne" is too recent (December 2013) to have made a collector of the main tunes for vielle ! But it's a editorial line we can manage in the next years, with the help of the musical sources in Dastum. (help us "liking" our FB page ! Or subscribing the association - you can contact me : [email protected]) I hope help some of US vielleux ! Happy new year, friends !
Michel
