Yep, with mtype set to 709. I also tried adding mem=64M but no improvement.

I've just order a cheap serial cable from here (hope it's good!):

So when it arrives in a few days I'll be able to diagnose problems better.

In the meantime I'll try different harets but so far I only found one signed 
one.
