Now I get it--I didn't realize that it was commonplance and accepted for 
MIDI gear to have patch sets that didn't follow the GM notes, and that 
there was an accepted way to switch in and out of GM mode.  I think what 
you're proposing is correct, then.  Thanks for the pointer to  the link 
on the SysEx--that made it clear.
