Hi everyone!
I've setup an initial repository for the new kit here:
https://github.com/mauser/DefaultAcousticKit .
As already discussed, this kit is based upon the samples of the Black
Pearl Kit 1.0, which are GPL licensed. I've double-checked this with
Glen, the author of the Back Pearl and Led Zep kit. I've removed all
brand-names from the samples and the drumkit descriptions and adjusted
the volume of the Second Ride, although it is still quite loud..
The kit isn't finished yet, iirc the midi configuration isn't complete
and it currently has some more instruments then the current GmKit. At
the moment i'm unsure if those additional instrument should be kept or
removed. This relates to Splash Choke, Hat-Semi Open, Hat Choke, Bell
and Ride-Flink. For me, especially the bell and the semi-open hihat are
useful.
Let me hear what you think about this kit, pull requests are welcome :)
Best regards,
Sebastian

Hi!
Yes, i would also prefer to create a new kit based on those samples
(and
with other sample for GM-Kit compatibility). Not only because of the
re-ordering of instruments, but also to clear the brand names (Zildjian
etc.) from the Drumkit..
About the size: My main concern was the size of the github repository,
not the size of the hydrogen installers. Maybe we should put that kit
into its repository as a git submodule? I'm not sure if this is too
complicated for the mainstream git person, i'm quite used to it so it
is
hard to tell...
Maybe the second snare could also demonstrate the drumkit component
feature.
Best regards,
Sebastian

Hi,
I think ideal drumkit:
- has to be properly licensed
- has to have the same layout as GMKit
- should have „nautral” sound (neither „vintage” nor „modern metal”;)
- should have several velocity layers
- it would be nice to have some round-robins
- probably souldn’t use components
Strangely, I somehow missed the „Black Pearl”, I have never hrard it.
I gave it a try and it sounds really good to me. There are two minor
issues, bu I think those are easy to overcome. First, it has different
layout than GMKit. I think retaining layout is important, as once we
stop shipping GMKit, songs created with that drumkit would be
unplayable, so providing a drop-in replacement seems to be a good
move. But creating new kit based on Black Pearl samples would should
work. Second, it is missing some sounds - for example, GMKit has two
snares „Snare Jazz” and „Snare Rock”. But maybe we could „borrow”
„jazz” versions from other kit, maybe Milo's?
I think twenty-something MB size is reasonable, fortunately times of
14k dial-up are long gone;) I have seen drumkit libraries of several
GB in size, those are definitely „too big”.
BTW. I have recently found SMDrums[1] project which provides
extensively sampled drumkit (e.g snare and kick are sampled with
127[!] velocity layers). Unfortunately, its license is a bit vague
(nothing beyond „free”).
One last thought: maybe we should reach out to users? Maybe someone
could provide good samples? I think this mailing list has little
reach...
