This only works if there is font of the specified name that has
the needed characters. What font name would one specify for a
font with Japanese and Hindi?

If the fill in layer does not have a font of the specified name
with the specified characters then some bit of code must find a
usable font or the app cannot display a readable char.

It would probably be reasonable to expect the layer above Xft
to find the "better" choices and if none are available expect
that Xft would fallback to finding "any" glyph even if it is
not the best possible choice.
