This is a handy tool for anyone making a birding trip or otherwise into the state of Iowa. ************************ Species in ALL CAPS can be classified into three categories in the state of Iowa: 1) UNRECORDED, ACCIDENTAL or Casual; 2) A RARE but regular species; or 3) record early or late date or unusual for time of year. Any species with three asterisks (***species***) would represent a first record for Iowa (UNRECORDED) and should be observed and documented very carefully. Species with two asterisks (**species**) are species that are either ACCIDENTAL, CASUAL, or a rare regular species, and should also be documented. Species with one asterisk (*species) should have some details of the observation provided. EAST: JOHNSON COUNTY: A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen at Coralville Lake on the 15th. Specifically, it was seen along the shoreline from Twin View Heights towards Lake Macbride's dam. This bird could also be seen at Scales Pointe in the evening when the sun is behind you. SCOTT COUNTY: 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen near Buena Vista County Park on the 16th. NORTHEAST: WINNESHIEK COUNTY: 3 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at Cardinal Marsh on the 17th. SOUTHEAST: LOUISA COUNTY: SANDHILL CRANES were heard at Cone Marsh on the 11th. 2 were seen on the 14th. VAN BUREN COUNTY: A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen along 240th St. south of Lacey-Keosauqua State Park on the 16th. SOUTH CENTRAL: MADISON COUNTY: A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen near the restrooms at Badger Creek State Park on the 18th. CENTRAL: STORY COUNTY: A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen just west of Highway 69 on CR E-15 on the 13th. POLK COUNTY: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and a THAYERS GULL were seen below the dam at Saylorville on the 13th. A SANDHILL CRANE was seen at Chichaqua on the 13th. 5 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at Polk City WA on the 14th. Highlights from Saylorville on the 16th included a THAYERS GULL, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and 2 GLAUCOUS GULLS. SOUTHWEST: FREMONT COUNTY: 4 SANDHILL CRANES were seen on the 12th. 2 record early MARSH WRENS were seen and heard at Riverton WA on the 14th. PAGE COUNTY: WHITE-WINGED DOVES were seen in Shenandoah on the 14th. CASS COUNTY: An EARED GREBE was seen at Lake Anita on the 17th.
