It was raining lightly as I walked quickly from the cemetery through
Hickory Hill Park, in Iowa City, wondering if the wind would keep the
birds out of the trees at the north end. When the trees came into
view, I could see there were birds there, lots of them. I bumped into
Mark Madsen, literally. In three locust trees there were so many
warblers moving and feeding it was hard to concentrate on one. Scores
of Tenn., lots of Chestnut-sided, Nashville, Blackburnian, Blackpoll,
Cape May, Bay-br. We were there an hour, which seemed as just a few
minutes, when we both had to leave, reluctantly. I wish these things
happened more often. We both left wondering what lurked in the park
beyond those three locust trees. I am almost afraid to find out what
birders found later.

If it is bad weather during spring or fall migration, put on the rain
gear. Get out there.
