Birders To continue the recent discussion of Bill Scheible, I can add the following:
Common Loons have been found during June or July in most summers and most commonly in northern Iowa but there are reports from all sections of the state. Probably the best single place to find a loon in summer is at Spirit Lake but there certainly are other lakes that are worth checking. We have no indication that any of these birds are nesting. Common Loons are fairly common nesters north of the Twin Cities in Minnesota but rare nesters south of there. Also, birders should be aware that other, rarer loons may occasionally occur in Iowa in summer. A Pacific Loon was found in summer in Hamilton County in 1994 and another was found elsewhere in 2001. Also, a Yellow-billed Loon was found in Tama County in summer 2008. Obviously, reports of any loon other than a Common Loon would require some careful documentation but the possibility exists.
