This morning I looked for marsh sparrows at the Hawkeye WA and
found a good area along Greencastle Ave., north of Swan Lake Rd.
Swamp Sparrows were abundant but it took a little searching to
find the spot where 5 NELSON'S and 3 LE CONTE'S were located.
To get to those birds I walked the farm access road east into
the open field of short emergent grass and headed for the
rock/concrete pile. Sparrows were from the pile eastward and
better the farther east. Dense pockets of marsh vegetation,
small snags, and an inch of water underfoot were the key elements
of success. Pssshing worked great on shy birds once detected.
I saw other sparrows species near the Greencastle boat ramp
including my FOY HARRIS'S SPARROW.
