Earlier this week, a gentleman contacted us about an owl that had hit his
window and was killed. He sent us a photo of the owl and it proved to be a barn
owl! Naturally, we said we would take it to be mounted for our educational
programs.

Knowing that this was a rare (endangered) bird in the state, we contacted the
DNR and was told that the last time barn owls nested in our county was probably
50 years ago, although there's no documentation of that. The last known barn
owl nest in northern Iowa was in Dickinson County in 1984.

So, we are now in the process of searching the area for a possible barn owl
nest. We'll let everyone know if we find one. Even if we find no evidence of a
nest, it's still nice knowing that there are a few barn owls around in our neck
of the woods!
