This afternoon at Neal Smith NWR, an AMERICAN BITTERN was standing near the bridge over Walnut Creek on the entry road. It was pretending to be invisible as it stood in ankle-high green grass.

During a prescribed burn a lone SWAINSON'S HAWK soared around the smoke.
