Last night on my way home there were 22 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS in the burn
that's been holding water on the refuge. The water is pretty much gone now,
and the birds weren't there this morning. I heard the first of year
DICKCISSELS near the parking lot this morning. I was also surprised to kick
up 7 SMITH'S LONGSPURS at the top of the hill off the Tallgrass Trail. I
hadn't seen any yesterday in the places I saw them last week.

"There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of birds. There
is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature--the
assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter." --Rachel
Carson
