Last night on my way home there were 22 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS in the burn that's been holding water on the refuge. The water is pretty much gone now, and the birds weren't there this morning. I heard the first of year DICKCISSELS near the parking lot this morning. I was also surprised to kick up 7 SMITH'S LONGSPURS at the top of the hill off the Tallgrass Trail. I hadn't seen any yesterday in the places I saw them last week. -- Karen Viste-Sparkman Wildlife Biologist Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge P.O. "There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of birds. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature--the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter." --Rachel Carson --- This mailing list is sponsored by the Iowa Ornithologists' Union.
