Very tempted to head home Thursday night after hearing of the relocation of the Yellow-cronwed Night-Heron but deduced that the birds in Emmett, Palo Alto, and Pochahontas were more likely to be found than the YCNH so I stayed the night. Unfortunately, the Super 8 in Esterville screwed something up big time and had no room for me even though I had a confirmation. Needless to say it was not so easy to find a place to stay on the Friday night before Memorial day. I ended up in Jackson MN. I was blessed with both Common Nighthawk and Chimney Swift so increased my Minnesota bird list by 2 to a whopping 122.
Saturday was not nearly so nice a day to bird as Friday was. Started with an hour and 15 minutes visiting with Ed Thelen (best sighting in Dickensen Co.) and watching his feeders for the Lazuli Bunting. The Lazuli chose not show so i headed off to cover my counties. I did get 25 species viewed or heard from Ed's yard. More wind and fewer birds visible. Best viewing of the Saturday--Lee and Nancy Shoenewe along with the Palo Alto County naturalist and her husband. They were checking out the pines at Lost Lake for Cape May Warblers. Did manage to complete the three final counties of my NW Iowa quadrant: Emmett County All the birds I needed to make the century mark were found either at Fort Defiance (west of Estherville) or within 5 miles west of Fort Defiance so I skipped the rest of the county and headed to Palo Alto.
