Scientific Title: Diamond occurrences in ultra-high pressure metamorphic rocks: a new frontier for diamond exploration by Dr. Ir. Ade Kadarusman Synopsis: Diamond is a famous mineral and widespread in industry (mostly for jewelry and drilling equipments). However, most of us have little knowledge for its various origins. In fact diamond is not only found in old continental cratons transported from Earth's deep mantle by kimberlitic-clan rocks, but the diamond is also found in meteorite-impact craters, meteorite rocks of a presolar origin and the most recent is the crustal rocks origin. The crustal diamond became a hot topic among earth scientist recently, since the astonishing discovery of diamonds of peridotitic and metamorphic origins by Pearson et al. in 1989 in Beni Bousera/Ronda peridotitic massif of N. Marroco, and Sobolev & Shasky in 1990 in Kokcehtav massif, Kazakstan, Central Asia, respectively. Since their works, the discovery of diamond of crustal origin increasingly recognized in major continental plate collision belts in Eurasia defined as ultra-high pressure metamorphic (UHP) terrane. Sulawesi Island is the only one recognized UHP terrane in SE Asia region. In this short seminar, I would like to introduce the diamond occurrence in crustal rocks within UHP belts and their geological, structural and lithological characterize, and also possibility of the presence of crustal diamond in Indonesian region and as potential for economical deposit. Review of the origin of Martapura Diamond (Borneo) from the previous studies will be discussed briefly. > Yth.
