Been a considerable amount of Morphing since bitnet in 1986. Darren
can give give a better morphology. As I recall the jump from bitnet to
usenet wasn't a smooth transition mainly due to hosting nodes
not wanting to expend time and resources that weren't a 'profit center'. A
newsgroup in just another subscriber to a list period
end. There are configuration options that allow bidrectionaly
posting/reading, but the uunet protocol masks posting until too
late for Lsoft exits so as security precaution one way posting;
i.e. must be subscribed to post, became the norm. Think newsguy.com is
primary newsfeed for IBM-Main, everything else is just
archival. What really bolloxed(?) up things is when Google started allowing
subscription postings to it's archives of lists so postings to google(or any
other service that allowed separate subscription) would not show up on the
subscribed list so it presents a sync problem. Administratively it's a
nightmare
without end. Recommendations previously posted have given solutions for
double mailings or post/nomail. Gives the subscriber more choices
than they're accustomed to.

IBM was a might slow to catch on to the Lsoft/Newsgroup phenomenon.
For a while IBM-Main was fed into Software Mall under Hardware. It was run
off a test server at Almaden. Don't know the whole story but one day somebody
pulled the plug and the Software Mall feature
became null and stayed that way for many months. After a few abortive
attempts to get it restored gave up in disgust. Think it
finally showed back up but by then google was off and running....
