Something that is easily forgotten if you are used to thinking in terms of
the distances between European countries is that the USA is a REALLY BIG
country which is divided by mountain ranges and other geography. It's
relatively easy to place a DR site or two safely within the lower 48 states
of the USA.
I have seen a lot of discussion about how "far away" was "far enough" but
none have advocated DR on another continent yet.

Staying out of politics and being entirely practical - don't you think that
five century-level storms in less than two years merit some attention?
It's time that politics was taken out of this, for the good of the human
race (and to ensure its survival). The USA emits around a quarter of the
world's greenhouse gases, but it will very soon be overtaken by China
followed - not far behind - by India.
This is something we're all going to have to deal with. It has implications
for disaster recovery - it's no good having your backup centre two blocks
away - it may have to be on a different continent.
The way Internet bandwidth is going - not a problem. But then you have the
grossly disparate Ts&Cs of (e.g.) software providers. Put your backup to a
US facility in Europe and the software can cost more than a third more.
