YMMV. Can back up a mod-3 in a couple of milliseconds. Many  dependancies. 
For version one, the backups must be in the same
storage group as the primary. For II this is waved. Can't do
multivolume easily. FDRINSTANT backup is much cleaner interface.
 
Guess you'll want to make a matrix for cost effectiveness vs
other solutions like PPRC.
