z/OS, z/VM , and LINUX can all run under lpars. In addition, LINUX can also run under a guest under z/VM. IBM provides something called an IFL (Integrated Facility for LINUX) that is its own processor (not part of the general pool) that runs z/VM with LINUX as a guest. This is IBM's solution for running LINUX on the mainframe. The cost of the IFL is much less than if you upgraded one of the general purpose processors. Also, I believe the cost of z/VM is not that great because you do not need any 3rd party tools. You will need, however, a sysprog that knows how to install and maintain z/VM.

I'm not sure what you are asking. z/OS and Linux are different operating
systems. Linux does not run in a Sysplex with z/OS.

If the Pick database runs in Linux, you might be able to run it in Linux on a z/Architecture machine. Have you asked the vendor? Did you then want to be able to access the data in z/OS? Perhaps that could be done using TCPIP.

Ops - my phrasing was almost as bad as my spelling. I meant Linux running in
a z/OS 1.9 address space. I thought you could do that but am now unsure.
So far I have not located documentation on that. However I do find, in

SAP on DB2 9 for z/OS:
Implementing Application Servers
on Linux for System z
March 2009
International Technical Support Organization
SG24-6847-01

on document page 15 (ADOBE 32/182) a picture showing a single CEC with
z/OS, Linux, and z/VM all running in LPARS and multiple Linux instances
running under the z/VM. I may be misinterpreting the picture as only the
Linux square
is labeled LPAR.

I would not be the one doing this. I am not a SYSPROG - Linux, z/OS, or
otherwise. I ran across a wild idea and put out a feeler. If someone knows
of such a thing being done then I will see if my management might be
interested.

At least I now know how to spell it. :-)
