I thought everyone used automated IPL procedures these days. Was P&H
sometime ago?

Not everybody. We always liked to have our operators able to IPL the
system(s) as well. Automation is wonderful stuff, but it's NOT a
substitute for competent operators with well-developed judgement and
some basic debugging skills, in case of off-shift problems. Many of the
problems we've encountered were fixed by operators without calling
support staff at oooo-dark-thirty in the ayem. They just noted what the
problem was and what action they took to affect a correction. We spend a
lot of time on operator skill development, and they are generously
compensated for exercising those skills.
