Other computers didn't need the advantages of PDS's. Nor the
disadvantages.
Does anything other than S/360 derived systems even use CKD type DASD? PDS
directories are built around CKD. And, in their day, moving the search logic
out to the peripheral was probably a good idea.
I don't know about TPF, VSE and VM, but in z/OS there are only two
structures using Key from CKD: PDS and (regular) VTOC. So with two
exceptions we use C-D disk. However lack of key does not make CKD disks
more compatible to FBA.
