Yep Gerhard exactly, the machines/microcode have improved significantly
Over the S/360 and370 days and with the advent of MVSand above the 16m line , 
things really took off. But I ask myself, how popular was PL/1 ? I wrote in it 
a bit on OS/VS2, loved it.
