John,
I just noticed this thread of messages regarding 3592s and DFHSM ML2 and
the thought of using OPENTECH TapeCopy to stack multiple ML2 tapes on one
3592.
===> Don't even think about that ! <===
Please do yourself a big favor and do _NOT_ touch ML2 tapes with TapeCopy.
ML2 tapes are recorded in the DFHSM control datasets by VOLSER.
If you stack ML2 tape volumes of the 3490 - type to files 1 - x on a
TapeCopy - created multi-dataset 3592 volume, DFHSM will never be able to
find that ML2 dataset and use it again.
The only datasets you can safely stack with TapeCopy are standard user
datasets on tape which are under full control of your tape management
system and the system catalog. Applications which externally keep track of
tapes in control datasets outside of the tape management system must be
excluded from TapeCopy processing so that they can find their volumes
again. Some of these applications are: CA-VIEW (aka SAR), RSD EOS and, of
course, DFHSM.
