Is there a description somewhere of why this special, internal-only
interface was added? Why should DB2 care what sort product a site uses, to
the point of mandating installation and use of an IBM product even if an
installation has chosen another?

This seems to me to be the same kind of bundling that got Microsoft in such
hot water...
