On any machine, you can use a Visara. We have two (redundancy) and they
work well. If you don't mind a single point of failure, you can use one.
A Visara is put on an Escon channel and can be EMIF'ed so that a single
Visara can connect simultaneously to multiple LPARs. We currently have
two LPARs. At one time, we had five. The Visara also allows connection
via coax "green screen" and TN3270E. With the "green screen", you can
set it up so that a single terminal can switch (by keystroke on the
terminal) between multiple LPARs. This allows a single terminal to be a
console and/or TSO terminal to multiple systems.

On a z890, z990, or z9, you can have an OSA set up as an OSA-ICC. In
this mode, the OSA acts as a TN3270E server and looks like a nonSNA 3274
type controller to the z/OS system. We have one of these babies, but I
have not gotten in to get it connected to our LAN or set up from the HMC
yet. Too lazy, I guess.

As far as I know z/OS 1.7 won't get you any new facilities in this area
over the current z/OS 1.4. But we are not z/OS 1.7 either.
