You have a couple of options. If all you need is NIP support, then simply delete the master console entries from your IODF and use the HMC console interface. That works great. Really, really great for remotely controlling a DR machine.
For outboard hardware, there is the IBM 2074 and the comparable Visara unit. The 2074 is a protocol converter that converts VTAM local to TN3270. You then use ordinary PC's with a suitable TN3270 emulator over an ordinary Ethernet network. All of your old hardware becomes a disposal problem. The Visara unit does that but also supports coax connections. With the Visara coax feature, you can continue to use those old 3472's or 3476's until they die. That is, the Visara is more of a drop in replacement for the 3274's. We have both and have had zero issues. Both are ESCON. Some newer z boxes have one of the OSA connectors configurable to perform the same function as the 2074. Not sure how that works. We are using all of our OSA's for OSA-ing. But, AFAIK, the Visara is your only option if you want to keep using coax. Note: although all these offer connectivity over Ethernet, it is very highly recommended that you do *not* interconnect with your company LAN. Let the PC folks squeal all they want, but hold firm. This is serious, and they don't have a clue just how serious. Besides, if you get some good auditors, they will pitch a fit if they see interconnection. HTH and good luck. -----Original Message----- From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Laine, Rogers Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2006 3:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: z/OS IPL Consoles We are currently running z/OS 1.4 with two LPARS that are using 3174-1L & 3274-1L controllers that have 3270 terminals attached for IPL'ing our two systems. What can we do to upgrade this old hardware to something a little more current? We also will be moving to 1.7 within the next 6-8 months. Can this help?
