Robert, Our mainframe IS going away. I'll definitely tell the group after the conversion is done, and then after it is out the door. I don't like it, but I can see the huge cost savings that will result. Running 2 datacenters down to 1, licensing z/OS at $30,000 per month going away. Building rental, power, phones, etc. all going away.
I think the one thing that makes getting rid of our mainframe so attractive is that we already run SAP/R3 in our sister shop in Pennsylvania (Joy Mining). At one time, SAP told us we would have to pay another license fee when we converted our R2 system to R3. Several years ago, they decided they wouldn't charge us a license fee if we merged our data into Joy's data. That is saving us millions of dollars. Mainframes are going away. We probably had 30 shops or more in the Milwaukee area when I started at P&H 21 years ago. Now there are between 10 and 15. Granted, some of the companies still run mainframes - just not in Milwaukee. I know First Wisconsin Bank was one of the biggest shops, and it merged with another bank. So did Marine bank, where I used to work before I went to P&H. But, a lot of the shops used to run MVS, and now they don't. Johnson Controls and Johnson Wax are 2 good examples. I know people from both shops. NO MORE MAINFRAME running MVS, OS/390, or z/OS.
