What kind of numbers do you see when *writing*? (File must be large enough to remove the effects of any write cache.)
I just ran a quick test using our FDRERASE product (which overwrites every track on a volume). I set it up so that it had to actually transfer a track-length record on every track.

I erased a 3390-3 (2.8GB) in an EMC DMX1000 subsystem.
The write phase took only 40 seconds, which is about 71MB/sec.
However, FDRERASE also waits for the control unit to harden the data from cache to disk, which took an additional 52 seconds. So the effective data rate including disk write time was 31MB/sec
