Hi Wade, In a recent post in response to comments from Ted MacNEIL you wrote:
"So, owing to my lopsided exposure to mainframes, I am hoping that you'll explain these PDSE issues. I've been using PDSEs extensively for personal datasets and haven't experienced any problems as a result of SMS interaction (or any other). If the PDSE datasets are SMS managed, does this alleviate the problems you've seen?" Whilst I have had a recent experience which makes me sympathetic to Ted's view, it is not the sum of my experience and therefore I would take a view along the following lines as I continue to use PDSE for ALL Userids personal data to avoid the very problem of directory full that Howard has got. PDSE Experience 1 ) For 3 years on my z/OS 1.3 system I ran PDSE's on non-SMS managed volumes with no problems at all. This year on my z/OS 1.6 system a member was corrupted resulting in TSO/E S0C4 abends when the user tried to access that member of the PDSE. 2) I cannot remember which system it was but I inadvertently added a PDSE to a list used at IPL, which caused the IPL process to cough a reject for that data set. (I say I cannot remember which release of z/OS because there have been recent posts on the list about this very topic.) Overall comment My system is generally not heavily used as it is not an accepted production environment, being more akin to low use development. Data sets do not generally get hammered and there is very little sharing between users, RACF sees to that. In this environment PDSEs are a boon to both system management overall, and to individual's productivity in general. PDSEs are still first choice for all non-system data, and often first choice for all non-IPL partitioned data set requirements. I think the preference at different installation between whether to choose a PDSE or not will vary, but for me in my environment they are gift from on high (as we all know that IBM is the exalted one.)
