Jorge, To the best of my knowledge, you cannot add volumes in batch. At least when I was doing this all the time, you couldn't. As to the 2GB TSO max region size, that is overkill. Are you using "ranges" for the DEFINE? If so, then I would contact IBM service on the issue.
Does defining a lesser number, say 128, cause the same problems? If not, break it apart into two defines. They do not take that long. When we want add many volumes (for example, 256) in a storage group from ispf primary menu + storage group + volume + define (is it possible do it in a batch JCL this operation?), the operation cancels with SMS RETURN CODE 16 and it generates a huge dump that it fulls the spool. This abend is provocated by a S878 system code (storage problem) with RETURN CODE 8 & REASON CODE 20021. We have increased the userid max region size from 7 mb to 2 gb and then we haven't no problems, but we believe that this way isn't the solution. We are trying to find any track in ibm web but at the moment we haven't been lucky.
