Ted, We have the same problem. We now run JQP and VVP from MacKinney systems. Much less expensive. We are still mainly testing (and the main dude just went on a 2 week vacation!). Our plans are to eliminate VPS entirely. Due strictly to its cost. JQP is the VPS replacement. It reads data from the JES SPOOL and prints it to VTAM or IP printers. VVP is the VTAM Virtual Print. It emulates a 3287 type printer to CICS, capturing the data to the SPOOL, where JQP picks it up and prints it. What we had (well still have) is a PC running Rumba with DLSw. The Rumba software emulates 3287 printers. We then used VPS to connect, via VTAM, to the Rumba software. That software then distributes the print to the actual LAN printers. We have also used Rumba with TN3270E printers successfully. I have also run the UNIX "pr3287" software to do this same function. That is, emulate SNA printers to VPS, but print to LAN printers. However we, Mainframe Tech Services, are tired of bothering with a Windows server / Rumba software. The LAN people won't support it, so we do. <blech> And my suggestion to use a Linux server (which I would be glad to support!) was met with deafening silence. That's why we are going to JQP and VVP. A pure z/OS solution. Acceptable to all parties involved. > -teD > -- John McKown Senior Systems Programmer HealthMarkets Keeping the Promise of Affordable Coverage Administrative Services Group Information Technology This message (including any attachments) contains confidential information intended for a specific individual and purpose, and its content is protected by law.
