My apologies: for the second question I was more concerned with the "classic" 
MVS files.  I actually have a handle (for the most part) on the Unix end of 
things.

You cannot do it that way. You must create a new set of "mount points"
onto which to do MOUNT commands to mount the HFS files. That is the
reason for the /Service subdirectory. You must then point the UNIX
files' PATH entries in the DDDEFs to the /Service subdirectory. Once
everything is MOUNT'ed correctly, the maintenance will go into the
cloned HFS files.
