As Shane already mentioned, target and DLIB will be allocated using an SSA prefix which you MUST give, no matter if your datasets are indirect cataloged or not. You'll have, say, a 'your_SSA.SYS1.LINKLIB' and a 'your_SSA.SYS1.ALINKLIB' allocated on the new packs. > That being said must the datasets be indirectly catalogued or not. > If not then how does it know what the "true" running datasets are. > If it is required then I can fully understand how it works and it can > be done on the target system while it's running. Uhm, my system has target libraries indirect cataloged since ages, and this makes the installation of a system by means of software upgrade a piece of cake. Honestly, I haven't think about how it works in case you haven't any target libraries indirect cataloged. > I have to say the online help and the printed documentation is poor, to be > kind, on this topic and poking around the CPPC screens doesn't give me any > inkling how it would works. Thanx all Maybe John Eells can tell you more on this. I used the software upgrade the first time a couple of weeks ago to install my zOS.e 1.7, and I find pretty straightforward. It took me two days to IPL the new system. But as ex-IBMer I used to work a lot with and for the CustomPac process, so I am a lot familiar with it. HTH.
