With the old "sled" hardware, a single formatting-type write would
cause the remainder of the track to be over-written with zeros; I
don't know if that's true with the RAID-type emulations.
It varies by vendor. The IBM disk references say that the remainder of
the track is "erased" without specifying what that means, but we have
determined that it is some sort of overwrite, with random patterns, I
believe.
EMC simply guarantees that the data is not accessable but we don't
believe they overwrite.
I usually hate to make unsolicited product references, but from the way
this discussion is going it is a good time to mention our product
FDRERASE, for erasing entire disk volumes and insuring that all residual
data is gone before the disks are sold, scrapped or returned to the
vendor. Also useful when leaving a DR site to erase corporate data.
