The last time I did this (a while ago), DFDSS had a problem copying/moving HFS files. I had to DUMP and then RESTORE.
Regardless, you will have to make sure no one is using the hfs and unmount it before DFDSS starts (and remount it when done). It is no longer necessary for HFS datasets to be managed by SMS (at least as far back as 2.10). I have both managed and unmanaged datasets and have not had any problems with either.
