However it is not mainframe problem. This is COMMON problem with OLD
EQUIPMENT and - I have to say it - bad management.
I dropped service for my old stinkin' RVA years ago. Never paid for
discontinuance. I'm still using it for "scratch-pad" purposes. Floor
space and UPS are not an issue (as far as now).
For other dasd boxes I have several packs of spare disks, and we can
replace them without any help. Everything at the price of junk.
I know case, where a company paid for DASD box over 10 times more, than
we paid. Similar config, mine was ESCON attached, their was SCSI/FC
attached. Why ? Because they kept old agreement unchanged, simply
(automatically) extendeded it to next year, and next, and next...
It was enough to say, no thanks no more support FOR THIS PRICE.
Negotiate. Find alternatives. Plan what to do when warranty expires. In
advance, months before of expiration date.
